Friends of Al-Aqsa Welcomes Tzipi Livni Arrest Warrant?
Friends of Al-Aqsa Welcomes Tzipi Livni Arrest Warrant
PRESS RELEASE
15 December 2009
Friends of Al-Aqsa welcomes the news that an application for an arrest warrant for Tzipi Livni was granted by a British judge, in order to allow the arrest and questioning of Ms Livni relating to charges of War Crimes committed in Gaza during Operation Cast Lead.
“This is an unprecedented move by a British judge and when one considers the evidence that has been presented over the past year relating to alleged war crimes in Gaza, it is absolutely necessary. This is the first arrest warrant that has been issued anywhere in the world for an Israeli politician who played a key role in the Gaza War. Israel’s failure to adequately investigate the allegations means that we as the international community have a collective responsibility to ensure that justice is achieved for the victims in Gaza,” commented Ismail Patel, Chair of Friends of Al-Aqsa.
Ms Livni was Israeli Foreign Minister during the attack on Gaza and was a key member of the Security Cabinet at the time making her culpable. Her current role as head of opposition and a potential future Israeli prime minister makes the historic significance of this arrest warrant all the more compelling.
Friends of Al-Aqsa believes that Israeli statements purporting to show that Israel respects International law are seriously erroneous and not apparent by the state’s actions where the occupation is concerned. This is a landmark move and the issuing of arrest warrants should be replicated with all other Israeli political and military leaders who were involved in the assault on Gaza in 2008/2009.
